[#10491262]

Can someone please confirm if my cunning plan makes sense?
I’ve acquired a pair of Shimano RS685 STI’s without any capliers or hoses as an upgrade to the bb7’s (why do roadies just sell the sti’s, honestly!! )
Now, given that shimano calipers seem to suffer from weepy weepy seals, I’m thinking that a pair of el cheapo deore brakes can be had for less than the cost of new hoses(2x29£), calipers (2x25£) and pads(2x?15£), and cover myself in a warranty by not going second hand.
Question is, will the deores plug straight into the sti’s or am I missing something? Apart from a bleed kit...
Ta muchly! Just need to wait till the sales are on....

Not 100% sure about the calipers but for the brake bleeding try this:

Worked perfectly with my Ultegra hydraulic disc brakes.

I think those are the shifters on my road bike. Rear is a flat mount caliper but the front is post mount - I think it’s essentially an XT disc brake caliper - just maybe with a different hose fitting.

Thanks guys, yeah from googling it would appear that all the calipers are essentially interchangeable - it just depends on the fitting hardware. Olives and barbs come in 2.3 and 2.1mm as well...

Olives are one size, it's only the insert that differs.

I did this when ungrading my Tripster to hydraulic brakes a couple of years ago, but used the calipers from some spare XT785 brakes. I read up on it first and discovered a number of others that had already gone this route. The recommendation to avoid excessive lever travel was to use BH90 hose which has a 2.1mm bore and then grind / sand approx 0.5 - 1mm off the width of the yellow Shimano bleed block. So you'll be overfilling the system slightly. I ended up with perfect level travel after following the advice. Use the silver inserts for the BH90 hose.

Great - thanks for the tips! This is looking promising... so you reckon those m315 would be ok with a bit of fettling?

Lots of reviews of mountain bikes I’ve seen with 315’s say they are a bit wooden and lacking in power. Might be ok on a racer though as you don’t have as much tyre grip etc.

I run xt calipers with my road sti levers.

Have the newer Shimano calipers got the leaky problem fixed? I've just bought some hydro stis and need to specify calipers to match. Hope look nice but are twice the price

I use deore calipers on my rs685s as I wanted cheap post mount callers. Work perfectly for 12 months and lever throw spot on. From memory I think I used the bh90 hose and fittings.
