There's a lot of talk about seat tube angle on here and in the mags. But I must be missing something so could you explain it?!

If your saddle is positioned relative to the pedals to get the best stroke* then the angle of the seat tube between the saddle and BB seems irrelevant. It will just affect how far forwards or backwards you need to slide the saddle to get that same position. Take two bikes with the same chainstay length and front centre but different seat tube angles, set the saddles in the same position relative to the cranks = your weight is in the same place between the wheels = no affect on handling. Surely it's the front centre or chain stay lengths that make the difference? If you want to mimick a different seat tube angle you could just slide the saddle no? All within a few degrees either way of a "normal" seat tube angle of course. Help!

*I've read and seen it on setup movies that the front of your knee should be in line with the pedal axel on the power stroke down.

seat position is in relation to the bottom bracket and regardless of frame angle shouldn't move for a particular rider. But if you bring the seat-tube angle forward on the frame for the same effective length of top tube, the top tube needs to shorten. Which often it doesn't. so whilst in itself seat angle isn't important it is part of a bigger picture.
