Anybody repaired a scratch or small chip in carbon bars? Some advice on the net advises small scratches / chips can be painted over with clear nail polish. Is there a way to know if a scratch is too deep? Any experiences? I've bought a new bar but it looks a superficial scratch on the old set so I was thinking of fitting them to a much less used bike. Should I just bin?

Probably just superficial. Scratches in aluminium are probably more dangerous.
Send them to me and I'll let you know if they are worth keeping or binning.

That looks only to be the lacquer. Wouldn't worry at all.
They look right dodgy. I'd really need to see them in person.
What width, height, sweep are they?

Looks pretty superficial to me Joe.Theres a good thick lacquer on there before you get to the good stuff....but given your history with catastophic failures of critical components I'd not be taking too many risks.
Gives me the fear, the carbon bar/stem thing. I prefer alloy with a carbon wrap. Best of both worlds.

I have carbon bars on all my bikes and it won't stop me using them 🙂

alloy with carbon wrap - all of the problems of both types, not so many of the benefits.
That scratch looks like nothing to worry about. Gently clean up the loose edges with some P2500 wet and dry and then re-seal with something like araldite and smooth over again with wet and dry. Wrap the P2500 round something like a cotton bud for fine control and not too much pressure.

Not all glue and string (CFRP) is the same.
Scratches in Alummium is not such a big problem. Notches are.
Chips in Carbon that have cut strnads give me the shivvers.
