Why are they so good at cycling?

David Millar
Robert Millar
Chris Hoy
Graham Obree
Craig Maclean
Jason Macintyre
Caroline Alexander (arguably not scottish)

All world class cyclists from a country that has a population of 39) What's that about then?

(I'm not Scottish)

Cars, trains, electricity, that sort of stuff are still relatively rare up there.

Hills. Less traffic. Longer distances between towns. I mean, after dedicating yourself to a hobby through dark, cold, wet and strong windy conditions for miles over hilly unforgiving terrain then things like that bimble around the sunny French countryside are a walk in the park.

We're used to wearing kilts so the youngsters aren't phased or put off by wearing lycra! ;O)

If you read Robert Millar and Graeme Obree's biogs, there's a lot of talk of a very, very strong road club scene with a powerful interest in finding and encouraging young guys who wouldn't otherwise have a lot to do to take up, and excell;. The same couple of really dedicated clubmen are mentioned as an early influence on both Obree and Millar. There will be comparable clubs and comparable people in England, but if you've got one particular scene really bringing people on then the total number of people in the country doesn't matter. ๐Ÿ™‚

According to the Mail the haggis was invented by the English...over a hundred years before Burns.

David Millar - Born in Malta, raised in Aylesbury and Hong Kong before returning to Maidenhead. Very Scottish, I think you'll agree.

Robert Millar has a blog? I'm just reading Graham Obree's book at the moment with Robert Millar's waiting for the next slot but I assumed it would be about him doing really well in some races, getting married, realising he wanted to be a woman and retiring to dorset to grow cats.

biog = biography

I'm 1/4 Scottish and 1/4 good at cycling, so maybe there's something in it.

Not quite in the same league but Stoke on Trent has a disproportional impact.
