We've got a couple of Americans over who plan to ride from Fife (near Kirkcaldy) to Glasgow. They are on Bike Fridays but are pretty hardcore riders.
Can anyone suggest a scenic bike route on bike paths or B roads? Oh and any where along the way to stay.
There are signposted cycle routes throughout Fife - and the NCN76 route goes all the way from Kirkcaldy to Stirling.
Falkirk - Glasgow along the canal?
The canal path may be a puddle fest after the rain. We rode the coastal path around the bridges at the weekend, it would be good as far as The Kincardine Bridge. We saw the sign for it's continuation to Stirling.
From Stirling, head for Cambusbarron. From there, you could go west in the direction of Aberfoyle (Cross Keys is nice place to stay at Kippen) or south in the direction of Carronbridge, which takes you into Carron Valley. From either Kippen or Carronbridge, head for Fintry, Killearn and Mugdock/Strathblane.
Loads of scenic bits, quiet roads, nice riding.
Alternatively, you could cross at the Forth bridge and head to Glasgow on the south side. Lots of options here; At Queensferry you can pick up the Sustrans route through Hopetoun house and the off road route (might be a bit rough with Bike Friday wheels - are they towing those wee suitcase trailers behind them?) all the way to Blackness. Have a look round the castle (filming location for Zeffirelli's Hamlet, apparently - Americans love that stuff, don't they?) then Linlithgow, Avonbridge, Caldercruix and the back roads into Glasgow (reverse of the Pedal for Scotland) route. Or from Linlithgow, through the Bathgate Alps to Bathgate and pick up the Sustrans path which runs alongside the railway to Airdrie and into the centre of Glasgow. You can ride path most of the way into the city, but it gets a bit fiddly after Airdrie/Coatbridge.
Stirling to Kippen via Thornhill for quiter roads(Cross keys rocks, very good food but they will need to book!) - double back behind Boqhuan House (small section that involves crossing a field past the old Mink farm following the Military Road)for the single track road that drops you out a couple of miles outside Fintry, back road to Balfron, Jenny Gunns Loan and Kilearn or bypass Balfron and go through Fintry over the Crow Road, cycle path to Blanefield, Mugdock Road out of Blanefield into Milngave. Stop at the Hillfoot Cafe on Milngavie Road for ice cream. Cut in at the Vet School and follow the Kelvin into Kelvingrove park and the heart of the city. When are they over? They could do it as a day ride quite easily or a very relaxed two dayer.
Cheers
