[#11309133]

I've treated myself to a DS-1 Park Tools scale. Always used sub 10 quid eBay cheapies before. So to give me a baseline, I've weighed everything in the shed, except for my Ripley which is currently in someone elses shed.

One point if you get them in the right order - heaviest to lightest. Additional points if you get within 1/2 pound of the recorded weight.

2018 Ibis RipMo (L)

https://flic.kr/p/2jpE1EH

2018 Cotic SolarisMax (M)

https://flic.kr/p/2jpE1Ex

2019 Planet X Tempest (L)

https://flic.kr/p/2jpzZSp

I couldn't be bothered to remove the pump and air cart. There's nothing in the nosebag tho.

2008 Spesh Myka (13 inch frame)

https://flic.kr/p/2jpCNtp

2006 Spesh Hardrock Sport (15 inch frame)

https://flic.kr/p/2jpE1Ec

2010 (I think) Spesh Enduro*

https://flic.kr/p/2jpE1E2

*my mate left this in the shed after an alps trip in 2014 "for a couple of weeks". It's still there!

Additional info on builds can be provided but you should be able to work it out from the pics. I was a bit surprised how heavy everything was 🙂

Go on then. Lightest to heaviest.

Myka - 18lbs
Hard rock - 20lbs
Tempest - 24lbs
Enduro - 28lbs
Ripmo - 30lbs
Solaris - 32lbs
Assumed the Enduro would be lighter based on smaller wheels and that people cared about weight a while back.
Wasn’t sure about which way round for the Solaris and Ripmo but my bfe was pretty hefty so went for the Solaris being the heaviest.

Edit - I forgot to add the weights. No idea what road bikes and kids bikes weigh just working back from the mtbs 😀

Which is why you should never weigh your bike.

People seem to think that small frame = light bike. Heaviest bike I've ever bought was some pig-iron Scott child bike. Weighed more than my Soul.

I'm going with:

Hardrock
Tempest
Enduro
Ripmo
Myka
Solaris

I assumed the Myka and hard rock were both kids bikes and had <=24” wheels. The specialized hotrock 24 that my lad had was really light, so that was my basis for thinking they’d be lighter.

You could still be right! Can't see Alex putting up with boat-anchor weights on his kids' bikes, to be fair.

I’ll have a go. From lightest up

Tempest (23 lbs)
Myka (28 lbs)
Enduro (29 lbs)
Hard rock (30 lbs)
Solaris (32 lbs)
Ripmo (33 lbs)

Normal Man is closest. But you're all misjudging one of the bikes.

To make things easier (!), I just weighed my Ripley. It's quite a burly build especially with Maxxis 2.4/2.5 tyres. But that came in at 30lb on the nose.

The Tempest is clearly the lightest at 23.14lbs.

For anyone who is still interested 😉

Spesh Enduro 26/M:  34.5lb

Ibis RipMo: 32.1

Spesh Hardrock 26: 31.1

Spesh Myka 26: 30.5

Ibis Ripley: 30.1

Cotic Solaris: 29.1

Planet X tempest: 23.14

The sort-of surprise was my wife's hardrock. I know it's not light but it's 26, pretty light tyres, cable discs etc... no wonder it was cheap!

How do the Park scales compare to the cheapy scales on the weights?  I sort of wonder whether they are any better that a <£10 luggage scale

They seem to read about 1/2 lb lighter than my cheap-y scales. I like the way you can clamp them in the stand tho.

Only 2lbs between the Ripley and the Ripmo. Surely that makes it easier for people to choose between the two.

Well maybe. If the idiot who owned both didn't keep spending money to make the Ripley heavier 🙂

I rode my RipMo today for the first time in a couple of months and it's still a very different bike to my 'butched up' Ripley. Not better, not worse but definitely different. I'd ride my Ripley on our local trails over the RipMo.

If I wanted to really differentiate them I'd buy a lighter fork, run the standard shock, ditch the 2.5/2.5 tyres and 4 pot brakes. But it'd be a whole lot less fun 🙂

The Solaris was interesting. What travel are you running?

I should called the Myka better. My wife has a 2013 one, size 15” frame, which is 30.5 lbs but has pretty heavy basic Wellgo v8 style pedals on it.

Solaris is 140mm running 2.8/2.6 tyres on 40mm carbon rims.  It's a bit lighter on std 29s.

Thanks.  By my back in the day reckoning that a 1g weight saving was worth spending £1 on that makes the Park scales worth about £226.80 😀

Sounds about right. I think we can all agree an excellent investment 😉
