I've always wondered when using washers like m5's or the likes which side to use. One side is flush and flat while the other side is slightly smoother on the edges i.e rounded out

https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/nuts-bolts/m5-stainless-steel-washer-form-a-pack-of-10/ You can see the difference in this picture.

Think you would put the flat edge against the bolt head but why aren't both sides flat and am I correct?

Stamped out by a press tool so rounded edge is stamped side.
Doesn't matter which way it goes but my OCD for things like that would put rounded edge at top.

Its just an artifact from them being stamped out of sheet metal surely

rounded edge at top.

Indeed, that is absolutely 100% the correct and proper way.

OP, I'm glad I'm not the only one sitting up late on a Saturday night looking at stuff like that!

Mine is slightly more exotic though.... Measuring crank spindle length to see if it will fit with a different bottom bracket.

Rock and roll.

Rock and roll. ๐Ÿ˜€

The washer's to protect the thing you're bolting up. Usually it's something expensive you want to look after rather than the cheap nut. I put the rounded face against the expensive thing.
