I've got this on my list of xc rides to do, but not sure what it would be like this time of year. Roman road conjures up the idea of a fairly weather proof surface, but the usual route also includes a fair amount of riding in the trees and what looks like moor land.
Is it worth riding in the mud, or wait until the Spring?
The beacons and valleys are generally good in the wet. It's upland standstone, so it's generally rocky and the mud there is is just wet paste on the surface which you can just ride through. It's not claggy slime.
Which trails are you looking at? There's more than one route including Sarn Helen in that area 🙂
What I know as the Sarn Helen is mostly firm surfaced but there can be a lot of standing water. There is also quite a major river crossing.
Loops off the Sarn Helen in that area can be mucky in the wet but it's a beautiful area so, you pays yer money you takes yer choice.
