I'm thinking of investing in some lighter XC race wheels for my Anthem 29er (and using the stock ones for hacking around)I'm keen to buy tubeless but I also race cyclo cross in the winter (on a cross bike)Instead of buying 2 sets of wheels would it be possible to use the same wheels, albeit with a different set of tyres for the cross season or is it impossible to have a 700c / 29 rim which can handle tyre width differences between say 2.1's and 35mm's??

Any experience / advice greatly appreciated .....

I've got stans arch ex rims on my CX (tubeless) which are pretty wide and run my 35mm CX tyres with no issues.

Isn't the rear hub spacing different?

Good point - I'm assuming a disc CX bike, the vast majority of which are 135mm spacing.

That said, I did have a 135mm hub in my old (non-disc) CX frame.

Currently using crests on my CX, handles 35mm (and obvs mtb tyres too) definitley changes the profile of the cx tyres tho, all the tread is now on the top of the tyre, not much shoulder action going on. Presumably this will cause problems leaning over in corners or off camber but I've been running the front one for a while and haven't died yet, did crash last week but debatable whether I'd have crashed whatever tyre/rim combo I had on (off camber very slippery grass/mud) Oh and rear mudguard clearance is now fag paper thin due to increase in overall rim/tyre size.

I measured mine on narrow and wide rims and the actual resulting width of the inflated tyre is near enough identical. The difference just seems to be that the beads are further apart so the overall shape is squarer (with associated extra volume). I don't find any issue with the shape.

I thought certain 700c tyres were gits to fit to 29er wheels. But then that's true of any rim size with some tyres.
