[#6786148]

I decided to give my hope headset a clean tonight, took it apart (something I've done loads of times) and upon tightening it back up it just will not tighten up properly

I can see visible rocking back and forth of the forks when it's as tight as I can preload bolt get it and the stem bolts torqued too

It was fine before this and had no movement whatso ever the bearings are new as in under a month old as is the frame and they are smooth too

Suppose to be riding Sunday please can anyone give me any pointers? Everything is put backtogether in the correct order too

Did you forget a spacer? Enough space between the stem and top cap?

Do you have a star fangled nut or a Hope head doctor.

Over tightened head doctor/star nut and pulled it back up the steerer column, meaning its touching the top cap an won't tighten?

You put the silver shims in between the retainer clip and the top cap?

Spacers the same and fitted back the same defo not that as shop set it up like that from new

It's a star fangled nut but using a hope headset and top cap and screw

Maybe a good call on the star nut, how deep in the steerer tube should the star nut sit? Could be an obvious way of telling if that's the issue

Thanks folks

Are you using centrelock discs? Sometimes they give the appearance of the headset rocking.

Rorsarch you've lost me.........

Not the discs nor loose adaptor as I said I can physically see the forks rocking back and forth in the head tube

Any other ideas?

Cheers ricky

But the problem wasnt there a few hours ago before I started to fettle

It was tight and solid so it's not something that's missing or not worked, it was working absolutely fine before

Since I've come to tighten it back up it just won't tighten enough it's like its not tightening the Bearings like the screw is almost redundant

Daft suggestion but is there any chance you need to take a few mm off the steerer tube,or have you tightened the stem before the top cap, just a thought,it's probably the simplest annoying thing lol

Nope it was working fine before the shop managed to get it tight and ive had it over a month so it's been fine for a month

Came to clean it up today and put it back together the same and bang.... It just wont tighten enough to stop the rocking ie a loose headset

Bearings in the correct way yep I've not actually removed them so there's no way they can turn themselves upside down without removing them plus I looked at them and they are in correctly

Absolutely stumped as to what I've done guess I'll be begging a shop tomoz to see if they can rescue me ๐Ÿ™

Ah rorsarch remember that thread now lol

Embarrassing post of the day award goes to......

Oooopps turns out in my stressed head last night I was missing something fairly obvious , gold star to those who said headset spacer ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I still for the life of me cannot find the said mystery spacer but it was indeed that. Kept looking at it last night thinking sone thing isn't quite right and then it hit me! All sorted now

Thanks again, you live and learn

Now just hope the Hoover doesn't suck it up and break the damn thing or Mrs will be even more peed off at me than she was last night

1st rule of fettling.Blame yourself first (no matter how sure you are it is'nt you.....there is no end to the depths to human stupidity).
eg. Spending 40 minutes bleeding a rear caliper...using the front lever.
or 9sp chain on 10sp drivetrain.
I could go on ๐Ÿ˜ณ

๐Ÿ˜†

I had a vision in bed last night, I kept picturing the top cap and something wasn't sitting right with it in my head ๐Ÿ˜†

I knew when I got up this morning it was defo that as I looked at a pic I've taken recently and there was one more spacer above the stem

I still cannot for the life of me find said spacer so went shop this morning get one ๐Ÿ˜†

Disaster avoided, and mental state repaired all is good in the world again

All in all all I can say is ๐Ÿ˜†

I fitted my new mix match headset to my new frame in the week.. It was rocking like a 50s disco.

Actually putting the lower bearing in solved that though.. :/

It had fallen on the floor!
