I bought a secondhand pair of Rock Shox Recon 351 forks (U-turn coil) a while ago. The forks seemed to have no damping and the damping dial was seized so yesterday I serviced them.
Took them apart and this appears to be the offending part:
I think something inside has sezed as the damping adjuster just seems to turn in what I think is a plastic part at the bottom of the rod. So it seems the internal allen key might be made of plastic and has rounded off so the aduster is turning but not affecting the damping mechanism.
I put the forks back together and there was still no damping so I guess I need to buy something or fix the damping mechanism somehow.
Anyone else had this issue and can I buy the damping assembly separatley? it doesn't seem to be shown on TFTuned.
Part no. RO134000 for an 06 to 08 130mm Recon, it's the rebound damping cartridge which is also prone to leaking it's oil into the fork lowers too.RRP £49.99
Thanks for the ID. I'm guessing there is no option but to replace the whole thing?
Seems pretty steep but I guess the forks are in good condition so it probably is worth it.
Anyone know of anywhere that does less than RRP? 😉
Blackbox rebound dampers sell for around £70 or so (+ p&p). Few people on here, & elsewhere are converting normal STD damped forks up, so there might be a Market for their old 2nd hand dampers. Also drop a mail to tftuned/ Loco, they may have some from upgrade jobs. Also just try a WTD ad on the classifieds
Is also probably worth asking if it could be fixed 1st, though may probably turn out to be part they just replace if faulty
good leads z1ppy, cheers
Internal allen grub screw is not replaceable as shaft is punched together (annoying) Replace with either same unit or Blackbox Dual flow unit ( out of stock a present due in a month or so with Fishers)
Std. unit available 😉
You might find that you can actually adjust it using a long allen key in place of the RS adjuster, I think sometimes the lower part of the it goes, but the allen-shaped hole goes further up - a lot cheaper than buying a new damper assembly, though the Black Box rebound is a nice upgrade on flat-out rocky things. I have a surplus damper rod assembly from a trashed Pike if you get really stuck, though I'm not certain it'd fit a Recon.
