I recently bought a second hand bike and all is good but I'm not sure the shock is quite right. It holds pressure ok but every compression makes a squelching noise. Is this normal for a boost valve shock or does it need a service. Thanks for any help.

Probably just hearing the various damping circuits.

If the shock starts behaving strangly, inconsistant damping e.t.c it probably blown the seal between the oil/nitrogen chambers, and will need a service.
They also squelch a bit at the very start of the compression stroke, which is the fload fluid going through the transfer port between the positve and negative chambers of the air can.

Could be suck-back? A service will sort it out.
