[#7973135]

Anyone had/seen a Roval Control SL front rim fail without crashing or obvious damage?

My front rim has started to fail in a very strange way; almost like a spoke is pulling through the rim and the rims starting to kink/fold inwards! No damage/marks on tire or even the rim decals.

As the bike/wheels are less than 6 months old I've gone back to the shop and they've taken it up with Spesh; so far the only question has been how I transport the bike (Thule tow bar carrier).

Whilst I wait to hear I just wondered if my issues is a one off or not?

Is the wheel near the car exhaust ?

Normally it travels above but on the day I found the issue I'd used a different type of carrier which hung the wheel nearer but still not directly in line with the exhaust. As well as no damage the rim was perfectly clean, meaning no signs of exhaust debri etc.

Was just gonna ask was the wheel near the exhaust as that's killed a few carbon rims

Sounds like exhaust heat. Seen a few carbon rims go like that 🙁

How on earth did I not know this 🙁

Just Googled about and found a thread on MTBR with almost identical failure picture; looks like I may has just learnt an expensive lesson 😥

Guess if I'm lucky the Spesh will offer a crash replacement rim!

Don't be hard on yourself o.p, I'd never heard of this either and have had a towbar mounted rack for 6 years. Fortunately though ive never had carbon rims but had been toying with some for my road bike. Definitely worth knowing. Hope you get it sorted.

Was the warning sticker still on the wheels when you got the bike
