What do you use to clean off your rotors?

I never normally bother but they're sounding a bit grimy when braking ๐Ÿ™ so I guess I should sort them out

If it's just muck you should be able to see it: Clean with soapy water.

But reading between the lines it sound like the grit may be in your pads!

IPA or Meths to de-grease, soap and water to clean. Plenty of water.

GT85 works a treat, leaving a nice film of slippery PTFE, so you're brakes will last longer because there is less friction. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Seriously though, I use IPA if I get any oil/GT85 over them, works better than Meths. If they are sounding grimey, then it is probably the pads, lightly sand them down and they should be fine.

No point washing dirt off. Contaminates (of the oily type) can be washed off with soapy water and a hot rinse, if you don't have Isopropyl Alcohol. If you've been riding with contaminated rotors, then you also have contaminated pads and will almost certainly need to replace them (the pads, not the rotor).

Well I've just cleaned the rotors with some soapy water also gave one set of pads a light sanding. They sound a bit better, but still not perfect.

But as they seem to work fine what's the worst that can happen if I leave them???

Bung some new pads in from Superstar - they are so cheap its not worth bothering to resuce dodgy pads.

boil the kettle, pour it over the disc.

drop a little washing-up liquid onto the disc, and a little more water, and give the disc a good scrub with an old dish-brush.

or your current dish-brush if you're a man and live alone...

boil the kettle, pour it over the disc.

works a treat.

you shouldn't need to do this as a matter of routine maintenance, but it will help if you get a bit lazy/slapdash with the spray-lube and give your discs a good splattering...
