Hi, should you lock out front and rear shocks when using a car roof carrier (Thule 561 fork mounted) ?
I thought perhaps the suspension would help to absorb the bumps but it I have read a few posts that say you are supposed to lock out forks?
Thanks
most fork manufacturers void warranty if used with fork mount carriers.
no idea if locking out would help. I guess if they're adjustable travel then droppign it right down would reduce leverage on dropouts a little.
Aint gonna make a jot of difference. The suspension won't move unless the rider is on the bike, or you pull the FRAME down onto the rack with straps ๐
better check my warranty
Thanks - that solves that!
wwaswas - isn't that a bit outdated? Many manufacturers USED to claim fork mounted carriers would void warranties but I think they stopped that quite a while ago?
I've used one for years - much more stable than the old (intact bike) type and never had any problems......
...touch wood!
edit: Oh, and I don't deliberately lock/unlock the shocks before mounting either - I can't see it mattering much really.
maybe you're right, this is what fox say;

32MM Forks: If mounting the bicycle in a carrier designed to hold a fork by its dropouts, use caution to not tilt the bicycle to either side. Tilting the bike with the dropouts in the carrier can cause structural damage to the fork. Ensure that the fork is fastened securely with the quick-release and that the rear wheel is properly held. If the bicycle ever tilts or falls from a bicycle carrier, do not ride it until it is examined by a qualified dealer, Authorized Service Center or FOX Racing Shox. A fork leg or dropout failure can cause loss of control and serious or fatal injuries.
[edit] rock shox just say 'be very careful' too. I guess it's just a case of they wouldn;t warrant damage attributable to roof mount rather than whole warranty.
wwaswas - just looked and that's nearly exactly what Rockshox say too - so I guess it is covered by the warranty...
thanks all...
