I've got some Rockshox Recon Gold that are a bit over 12mths old and they are starting to go a bit soft. They are coil sprung and until recently I could never bottom them out no matter how hard I land but recently I can easily bottom them out..... Are they knackered or just in need of a service? (They've never been serviced since new)

Have you gained any weight?

No its not that! They used to be bottomless even when absolutly casing big drops and now I can bottom them just compressing for a little hope on the flat. Would a service make that much of a difference?

a service might help - damping deteriorates and if yo are using a fair amount of compression it could make a difference

I am servicing my recon TK golds this week, I have some spare time and should be easy so may aswell. Mine seem a bit sticky also never bottom out, I'll also see what spring I am running.

Service them, won't do them any harm and you will also see if you have broken anything inside, doubt you have though. Probs just needs some fresh oil in the damper to work effectively?

How hard are they to service? Do I need special oil?

You'll need some 5wt and 15wt suspension oil.

I believe stuff from a motor bike place will do, and be cheaper. * somebody more knowledgeable confirm this.

You will need grease for the coil, Stendec is what I plan to use.
