[#3356877]

Wifes got a boardman fs team and the other day said "These full suspension bikes arent very suspensiony" ๐Ÿ™„

So duly I had a look thinking she was being a bit silly but after setting it up for my weight and with 30% sag and having a ride I was buggered if I could get it to even remotely achieve full travel despite my best carpark bouncing and then having a run around swinley down all the best bits.

On inspection I noticed what looks like scoring on the shock shaft its fairly uniform and all around the shaft and not confined to one place nor is it a singular line, doesnt feel raised either (you cant really feel it with a finger nail)

So Ive taken it back to Halfrauds on monday, spoke to them yesterday and they have spoken to fishers. Fishers have claimed this is normal on the new monarch and doesnt effect performance โ“

I was just wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of this as this to me seems, well, wrong!

Pics?

Let all the air out of the shock and (carefully) compress the suspension to check that it'll go through the full stroke. I think there will still be some ramp up due to air in the IFP.

Also I think you can buy bigger volume air cans to go on monarchs. Loco is the man to speak to.

Cant do pics at the mo as the bike is still at halfrauds I'll see if I can pop past and get one later (I want to know what they say about the travel)

Re the ramp up I'm not in the loop regarding suspension designs but this was up there with the reason why It may not be achieveing full travel. But I played with it a lot with different pressures and regardless if how much sag I ran (even upto 50%) it only seems to use a small amount of travel. At 25% sag It would barely use 50% of the avaialble travel regardless of hit size.

I've also done the let the air out test and yes you can achieve full travel but the rebound speed doesnt seem to differ regardles of what speed its set on which is odd (this is the same with 20psi in the chamber)

I personally think the shock is either knackered or the seals are too tight.

@retro Im hoping that I shouldnt have to buy shock parts for a bike thats no more than 2 months old with about 30hrs riding time.

@Owen have you got a boardman if so is it the older style design or the new fangled one?

Well I agree, but it's a relatively cheap way to make the shock stroke more linear.

Are you and your wife lighter than the average [s]fatto[/s] mountain biker?

No i have a GT idrive5 which i fitted the Monarch 4.2.
It does sound odd as on mine th erebound has a very noticable effect and with no air i can push the shock all the way through its travel. I do run mine at a high pressure though.
Which model of shock is it?
