Ive recently changed the oils in my Recon Race forks. A noticeable difference in performance was felt. However, on recent rides, I've started to feel a slight 'rocking' motion in the forks. It feels almost as if the headset is loose (is isn't). When the front brake is applied, and the bike rocked, there is a definite, albeit, very small movement. Im assuming something, somewhere in the fork has worn out. Another symptom is a slight (im guessing 1-2mm) degree of play when you pull the front of the bike up - as if the stanchions are moving upwards from the outer legs??

Does anybody have any ideas as to what it may be, or indeed, if this is a common problem?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Almost definately worn bushings.
Put your finger between the stanchion and the arch, at the front of the fork, and rock it with the brake on. You might feel play between the legs

You can't fix it yourself - It's time to get them off to TFTuned. They resize the bushes as part of a normal service. Once done, it'll probably never need doing again. 🙂

Are worn bushings to be expected after 18 months? It had a few longer races last year but no winter riding? Id already priced up TFTuned in anticipation! Heard good things about them.

I'd say 18 months is good going. I've had one set go a bit slack in as many weeks before now. They just 'wear in' differently.

Dont know if you noticed, but I edited the post above before your first response. Theres a slight "upwards play" as well. I.e. when pulling up, theres perhaps 1 or 2mm of travel upwards - indicative of worn bushings as well I guess? Thanks for your replies anyway.

Hmmm. Probably just a bit of play in the spring (Air or coil) or the damper. I doubt it'll make any difference.
