Usually that's just to take the piss. A mate was trying to get me to turn up on a road ride with baggies, 3/4 length sleeve dh race jersey, mtb full finger armoured gloves, knee pads, camelbak, black socks, helmet peak, mtb shoes, etc. etc.

Preferably before they get on the bike, otherwise it may be a bit awkward. Shaving cream probably doesn't do a chain much good either.

If you turned up dressed like that you would be dropped, pure and simple. Not through the spiteful endeavours of the riders, just the fact you won’t be following many wheels when the speed is over 25mph on the flat. If you did hang on for 3 hours I’m sure you would be very popular and earn a lot of respect. If not, I doubt they would even notice that you'd gone. Apart from a couple of "Who was that strange chap in the beach gear" or "Do you think he got home OK?"

I wore a camelbak on my road bike yesterday, it was over 30C and there's no way I'm risking dehydration. I wouldn't use at other times of the year, too uncomfortable. Mtb shoes, too - but that's a budget thing, as and when I can afford some new shoes / cleats / pedals I'll probably get proper road stuff.

I personally wouldn't wear team kit on the road bike but it doesn't bother me that other people do, a quick survey of richmond park usually reveals the people in the polka dot jerseys etc to usually be the slowest riders and Cervello test team seam to be rivalling Man U in kit sales this year...

I go out of my way to look as little like a roadie as I can when on my road bike. The roadie look is not a good one - making it even more obvious with massive company logos is even worse.

Helmet peaks just get in the way on the drops, Camelbaks don't sit well with the lower front end, it's not just a fashion thing, they just don't make road riding enjoyable!
The only ones who really seem to care are the MTBers frankly who see 'roadies' as a different group of people.
I like wearing roadie style kit on my road bike, it just feels better not to have baggies etc flaping in the wind. I've got a nice collection of Team Aldi jerseys 😆 Saying that i have bought a couple of nice ones this week for my jaunt to Paris next week.
Picked up an Endura England Flag Jersey and a Raleigh Pro Team Jersey, on one of teh days you are meant to ride in a Pro Team Jersey, I wanted a Sky one due to the English links but there's no way I was going to stump up £60 for one, and as I ride a Raleigh road bike, I thought I'd get the Pro Team one.
There's no doubt I'll use it for other road rides, but I wouldn't wear it when out on the Mountian bikes. The Aldi ones and the England one I will and already do, but with baggies.
Personally I don't see the problem with wearing full Pro Team kit, it's their money and they can spend it as they wish. When I was match fishing you'd get guys turn up in replica team gear adn guys wearing trackies and a t-shirt.
What you wear doesn't contirbute to your level of ability and skill, it does however contibute to how you feel about yourself. If you feel good wearing team kit you'll do well within your abilities, conversely if you feel crap about yourself you're never going to perform well.
There's also classic kit. The question is, how long does it take for an old team strip to be acceptable?

I'll admit to being a snob about these things, but I'll keep that to myself on the road. In the meantime it's a nod or a wave to anyone on a bike especially mum and dad escorting their kids along the road.
I was actually brought up by riders who thought it was important to look clean smart and tidy on a bike, but that may have been more important back then when anyone half serious about riding would have been in a club.
