Hi,

My 9-speed 105 right hand shifter doesn't seem to spring back into position after down shifts anymore. I'm thinking it's knackered but was wondering if anyone had any ideas to miraculously bring it back to life?

Cheers
Andy

Same thing happened two weeks ago to my 9sp tiagra on my uncle john.
After an hour of trying to fix it at LBS,resigned myself to a new set of sora's.

I take it is a pain in the butt to take a part?

(if 10 speed is the norm now, is Sora the only 9 speed shifter? I use 9 speed for the winter bike(

Just looked at a rh shifter £80...Sora is cheaper - is it any good?

Yeah it's a bastad to take apart. Any 9-speed will do really (tiagra soon to be 10sp apparently) as long as it functions the same and is not the silly button shift.

£80 though! gulp!! My elastic band trick is cheaper for now 🙂

If it's really dead, try this; put it in a sink filled with soapy water and soak it for an hour or so, then rinse it under a hot tap for a bit. Then stick it on a radiator to dry it out, and use a TINY LITTLE BIT of spray lube or oil dripped into the internals.

Might work, might not.

Shimano have a three year warranty period on shifter pods, which is something not a lot of people know. If your shifter is under three years old your lbs should be able to send it back to Madison for you.
If it's older it could be a corrosion issue or just a spring having come unclipped inside. They are a pig to take to pieces but it's not impossible.

I didn;t know that but it's good to know thanks.

My left hand (front) Tiagra shifter has been replaced twice under warranty as there was a known problem with an internal part that kept breaking - Lee, worth asking your local shop if they can help, or maybe someone from Madison who frequents the forum and has been on pootles might be of assistance....

Cheers, but these are from 2005/6. I think it's the spring thats come unhooked as I was fishing about in there with a pick when I was trying to remove a snapped shift cable! whoops!
