what options exist for shifters and brake levers if wanting to build a roadbike with flat bars?
never build a roadbike before, and considering making one for some extra speed on the road commute to work, but dont like riding with drop bars.
Shmimano do the shifters.
Something old-school with downtube shifters - then whatever brakes you like. Or else quite a wide range of Shimano groups have the option of flat-bar shifters:
If its got flat bars sky high, is it going to be any faster than a mtb with slicks? Mmm? MMM?
What's wrong with drops? You can get brakes for the tops if you like. They can take a bit of getting used to at first but I recommend you do as they are superior.
Road bikes have shorter top tubes as they're designed to run with drop bars, so you'll need a very long stem as well as the flat bar. Shimano do options, check their range for hybrid/city style bikes.
anotherdead, its just an excuse to try build another bike ๐
I do have a mountainbike with slicks and been assuming a roadbike with bigger wheels, higher gearing and narrower tyres should be a fair bit faster, but maybe in wrong.
Unless it's a TT bike that is just wrong.
so if i build it around a TT fram it will be ok?
I am not a massive fan of drops so I run flipped on-one mary bars on my pompino. They even have fetching Laura Ashleyesque sky blue bar tape on them ๐
= no point
Shimano R440 8spd and 9spd, R770 10spd shifters
Any rear mtb shifter will work with rear road mechs but the fronts are different, and if you run a triple need to be matched. If you run a double/compact then there is some leeway to mix and match.
Personally, I think drops are cr@p, for a range of reasons. Make your own mind up.
