I have the american classic 420s and would advise against. They are pretty light for what they are and while I think I can feel the aero effect at higher speeds, they are pretty flexible laterally to the extent that I'm toying with the idea of stiffer, potentially heavier alternatives. I haven't ridden on the newer styler of rounded aero rims so haven't anything to compare them with, but crosswinds can also be a chore.

I'm not particularly heavy at 73kg and not going to break any power records, but even with the brake pads backed off by a chunk, I can still get them to rub on sprints and climbs. The effect may be negligible and all in the mind, but I'm now also questioning their feel on descents at speed as well. My commuter has some pretty rugged Halo wheels which seem to put up with my erratic pedalling action far better.

Interested in what you go for.

Totally depends on your budget...

The Dura-Ace's aren't bad, but you can get better for your money. The AC 420's are narrow, not especially stiff, and though quite light with a marginal aero benefit, there are plenty of better wheels out there (many from AC themselves!).

Just put some Reynolds Assaults on my road bike... Stiff, light, aero, tubeless compatible, they're the absolute business. Not cheap mind, but they do make Dura Ace C50's seem very poor value by comparison!

I have american Classic 350s and 420's.
I thought both wheel sets were a little flexy in my litespeed frame but when used in my Cervelo s3 I get absolultly no rub at all.
I think the frame had a quite alot to say in how the wheels perform and how flexy they feel.

Anyhow. The 420s are decent, the 2015 version are really nice but if you've enough cash to buy duraace I'd really look at some reynolds attack / strikes or Spin K2 Carbone XLR38 - which look really good

Look at Superstar Components, they have some excellent wheels at silly prices.

What sort of riding? Racing? Sportives? Club runs? For the race bike? Winter trainer? All year round do it all wheels?

Unless you want the fancy stickers then probably some of the wider U shaped farsports rims built on DT Swiss or DA hubs.

I've previously recommended the DA9000 C35s but I need to mention now that I've actually just had a second replacement pair returned under warranty. The problem is with the lacquer on the carbon fairing. Water ingress causes it to bubble and then flake off. I don't know if this will also happen on the C24 but it might well. Which is a shame because from a performance perspective, I still rate them. They are tough wheels; reasinably light for their depth, strong axles, ti free hubs and they stay true.

If you want something for racing then my recommendation from experience would be to go 50mm carbon tubular. The Light Bicycle rims get very good recommendations on this forum and I use some (60mm) Gigantex tubulars built up by Wheelsmiths. These come in at 1450g (so they are the same weight as the C35 clincher I had previously) but are almost twice as deep and have a modern 'toroidal' design. With OEM hubs, they cost just over £700 which admittedly is not cheap, but they do offer something approaching a discernible performance gain.
