My "road" bike has a braze-on mount front derailleur. It seems to me a crap mounting a derailleur. Difficult to get set in the right position both vertical and yaw, and lots of play from either bolt movement, mount bending or both.
I need to change derailleur anyway (3x to 2x), should I cut it off and buy a band-on derailleur? Or if I get a better quality one (current is Sora) will it be better and matter less being 2x anyway?
Nothing wrong with braze on front derailleurs at all. It's the only option available for road Di2 for a start.

Very true.
However, some of the 'braze ons' these days leave a lot to be desired and can snap off or have the bonding or rivets fail

You can always use a braze on adaptor 🙂
I tend to buy braze-on front mechs so that they're transferable with a different mount.
Before you remove the bracket, check that a band-on mech would work i.e. your seattube is round and of the right size - many are oval or 'square'
