Most double 130 pcd chainsets come with 53t/39t chainrings - I suppose this is considered the best combination for most. I get the impression that it's important to get the right combinations of rings - for optimal shifting I think. I think some chainrings are sold as pairs that are meant to go together. I'm wondering if this really matters to a casual rider - so I guess I'd be OK with 53t/38t chainrings and any other combination that I fancied - am I right or am I going to get tutted at by proper roadies...?!

the bigger the gap between them, the harder it will be to shift quickly and smoothly, basically. So a 14t gap is okay but the 16t gap on most compact (50/34) can be a tad slower. You wouldn't want to go bigger than this.
