I know this isn't a new idea, but I seriously gave it a bit of thought t'other day. Upgraded my road bike's cassette to ultegra and it's much nicer to ride so thought about doing the same on my 2x9 Prince Albert.
Who's doing it and which cassette are you using?
If you already have the cassette why don't you just throw it on and give it a try.
My XC bike had a DuraAce cassette for many years - expect lot's of shifting and gear crossover.
I use a 12-27 Ultegra 9 speed cassette on my bikes matched with a 40/27 double. It's reasonably flat here so I don't find I need a dinner plate sized cassette, and I like the tighter cadence range.
i did it in the 90s,
12-21 7 speed cassette, running 24/36/46 up front.
it actually made a lot of sense, the granny gear was usable up most inclines, i always had the right gear available to use.
downsides are; you change gear more often, and you need to be fit, due to lack of really low granny gear.
it was good, i would do it again if i wasnt fat etc.
I've been using Ultegra abd Dura-ace cassettes on my MTB's for years without a problem.
