what are the pointy bits that stick down from the brake caliper for?

Do you mean the bits that can flip up or down? They make the calipers a bit wider so you can get your wheel back in even if the tyre is inflated. Or are you talking about some other pointy bit?
sorry bits on the brake blocks not the caliper.
i did wonder if they were wheel guides but couldnt really see them making that much difference especially when you can use the littllever to open the caliper up.
They push air on to the brake blocks to keep them cool*.
This means your brakes won't overheat when you get over 60mph on big descents ๐

I thought they were to hold/move brake shoe/pad while adjusting to rim etc.. If not they work well for doing it ๐
They are wheel guides ,they have been on some better brakes for years
