SPD-R 540 vs 105

What's the difference?
I can tell m540 are better than m520 with MTB pedals but is the same true for 105s?
Are they better made for instance? Plastic or metal axle locknuts? Anything like that?

No real difference. The 105's are a bit wider, makes no difference though. My last pair of 540's were pretty worn though, I guess I could have gone right through to the axle. The bearings were still spot on with no servicing. The 105's have a replaceable metal plate (i think) so they'll probably last longer.

I found the 105 for £35 so didn't bother investigating much further than that.

Not the ones I want, no.
Hence the question in the op: what's the difference!

I dont understand, the 105's are (slightly less than) £30 brand new on ebay from a bike shop.

R540s still use the older shape, aren't shiny, work fine

5700s use the newer, wider platform, have a replaceable metal plate on the top to help the pedals last longer and they're shiny and much nicer looking.

105s on both my road bikes. A definite step up in shape and secureness from the 540s I had before.

Larger surface area on the 105's, theoretically means less of a "hot spot" as the load is spread out a bit more.

Both use the same cleat though, which is the part attached to your shoe, so I'm not convinced yet.

540's in white silly cheap (cheaper than from Madison) from Halfords at the mo if you click and collect. 105's on eBay for under £30 are all without cleats. Cheapest with cleats is usually £35-£38.

105s are wider, lighter, have a metal sole plate and more machining forward of the axle. Is all that worth an extra £12?? Dunno.

Speedplay gave Sir Brad a dodgy knee , apparently.
So my money is on Look Keo's too, Keo Carbon Blades to be precise.
I moved from Ultegras to these and they are so much nicer.
Snap in crisply and has a wider platform which is actually very noticeable , or shall I say tangible .
Zero hot spot after hours n hours of use.

I was a regular Ultegra and changed to carbon Keos for about a year before reverting back to the Ultegras. I think the engagement is sharper and the cleats last longer.

I should really sell the Keos.

Just don't get the Tome Xpresso's.
Look great, but very vague to clip into, sometimes crisp, other times-no click at all!
The cleat can also slide from side to side once engaged, not like normal float-very odd.

I've had Keos since they first came out (switched from SPD-SLs), I keep being tempted to switch back, I find the Keos harder to get into (although I admit after 9 years it's not difficult and I've actually forgotten how the Shimanos felt), and the cleat wear annoys me. Bearing life on the cheap ones is dreadful too.

Get the wider ones if you can find them, a lot better pedal. I use Ultegra and Dura ace on our bikes mind but when they changed the shapes of the Dura one I noticed them being a lot better.

I've used a LOT of road pedals over the years and the only one I'd have no wish to return to is the Look Keo, god awful pedals!

I went for these when I transitioned from MTB to road. They clip in almost as easily and clip out just as easily as SPDs. No dodgy knees so far!

Cheers guys. I've ordered 2 sets of 105s and I'll wait for them. No massive rush.

Mrs PPs new road bike arrived at the shop today. Ohhhh that's nice. Really pretty. I'm doing an extended, OTT PDI on it when I've got the spare time this week. 🙂

Running Crank Bros Mallets here 😳

Roadies mates laugh at me, but I like the large platform under my foot and that I can walk in the shoes and that I can jump on my bike in trainers if I'm just nipping out for a family pootle.
