Bought one off eBay not thinking to check if it's for an MTB or road bike, that said checking the Ritchey website most of them appear in both the MTB and road sections, same weights, same diameter etc
Is it safe to assume there is no real difference?

No difference. I use Ritchey WCS carbon stems on all my bikes - road, cross, track and MTB.
