the unthinkable, checking the updates after a few days and noted his blip and gone , clicked updates to see if he had packed in and to read that just knocked me for 6
although i never knew the guy - having followed his blip for the last 2 weeks this news shook me and i pass on my condolances to all that knew him.
Enjoy the trail in the sky.
Sad times for all.
Yeah what do you say about that. Hate when this sort of sh1t happens to people who have a massive zest for life, young family and so much to live for. Accidents happen but sometimes they take the wrong peeps. Condolences to his family and friends, may his memory live on.
Tragic... RIP Dave Blumenthal.
Awful 🙁
🙁 absolutely awful.
Very Sad he appears to have sustained massive head injuries 😥
R.I.P
i nearly hit a pick up in colorado and a truck in new mexico during my race. Both times descending and both times i was on the wrong side of the dirt road for a quicker line.Pete Basinger did the same last year and luckily only substained a collarbone break.its hard to keep perspective for so long, you sink into a world where its only you and making ground is only what matters. All of lifes crap you deal with is not relevant its just ride eat and sleep.
Its horrible.I just read he had a 4 year old daughter.tragic.
the bright side, he died doing what he loved and it was quick
my thoughts with the family
RIP
Really very sad, tragic news.
Tragic story. What can you say.
Jesus. That's awful.
Having followed his progress & call-ins during the race, it's clear that he was the kind of person who really lived life to it's fullest. He was certainly no spectator. A terribly terribly sad day, especially considering the young family he leaves behind. Be careful out there everyone!
Really sad.
Just read this in his blog post on why he was doing it:
Linnaea, soon to be 4. She will miss me in ways an adult cannot truly appreciate, and I hope that our love will not be weakened by my absence. I hope that local friends will come to play, visit, and support Lexi and Linnaea while I’m gone, so that their time without me is happy and fulfilling.
Tragic.

nothing more to add really.

Totally, i had a near miss in an expedition race, Day 6, 5 hours sleep in 6 days, fell asleep on the bike going downhill at 50+kmh, glanced a tree and found the only soft bit of ground. Scared me to the core. I think that tripped something in my head and my last race was just that, my last race of that length.
RIP Dave, having just read his blog he seems like a guy who loves everything he does and his family. Gutted for there loss.
On the subject of racing, myself and Matt nearly hit a bus at 40mph on Transwales last year doing that same thing, you get into your own world and your just looking for the best line.
I'm hoping to race this event in a few years hopefully i can keep Dave in mind.
