so what do you call the little plastic sleeve that probably comes with the rim tape and is a liner for the valve hole ? and where can I get a couple (presta size) ?

They come with the rim, not the rim tape, usually in some mavic rims.
I'd call them gromits I guess

aha, it is a mavic rim, and the grommet is knackered - any idea where I would get a few - wheel builder, Merlin ?

one of those awkward things that's worthless, but not common. Might be worth asking an lbs if they've got any kicking around, or just don't bother with it!
goldenwonder - so I guess it serves no real purpose then ? can I just take it out - I suppose it maybe holds the valve central, but once the little tightening ring is done up it's maybe not required ?
so can I just take the broken one out and do without ? thanks
