Rim Swap.... ERD difference

Want to swap a 29er rim, 596 ERD to a DT XM481, which has a 601 ERD. Is that 2.5mm difference is going to require new spokes?

Was thinking maybe longer nipples might let me get away with it, but the DT rims come with/require the Squorx nipples, so maybe not an option.

Personally I’d always use new spokes when building a new wheel with a new rim. It’s not worth saving the money for the sake of £15

Depends on the current spokes. They only come in 2mm increments so they are likely to already be a little too long or too short. If they are slightly over then they'll be fine, slightly under you might be pushing it. No issues with reusing spokes. The steel will be fine. Also a rim swap is much easier than a re-lace. You can tape the rims together and move each spoke over one at a time.

I had a wheel re-rimmed by the lbs with the same spokes (had a ding in the original rim) - pillar triple butted - and it was never right. Kept snapping spokes. I rebuilt it myself with new aci spokes / the same rim and not snapped a spike since. So reusing spokes not for me.

Have you actually measured the erd or going off specs? No problem with reusing spokes if they are half decent in the first place, probably worth a risk trying it & only ordering new spokes if they don't work out OK.

longer nipples wont get you into the "go" area. So, its a no-go from me

Have a peer inside the existing rim. If there is more than 1-1.5mm of spoke poking though the nipple, they should be ok to reuse.

Would probably show that the original wheel builder wasn't that good though, or using up spokes of the (slightly) wrong length...

I had the same issue recently and decided there wasn't much to lose by first trying the existing spokes. I was moving from enve to stans which means I was heading well into the No-go region. Using the existing spokes is free and as previously mentioned the rim swap is quicker and easier.

Its been fine so far. If I start getting broken nipples then I will buy a new set of spokes...however they will definitely cost more than £15 that somebody mentioned. Your not getting decent double butted spokes at that price. Also I thought the current fashion was to be less wasteful..?

ACI black double butted spokes are £0.46 each at Cyclebasket and come with brass nipples for that price too. £0.46 x 32 = £14.72.

Doesn’t take into account postage admittedly - so call it £20 for 32 spokes. They’re decent steel / double butted etc - I’ve used them in quite a few wheels now and don’t seem any different to DT Swiss competition ones I’ve used in other wheels.

If you decide to measure the erd yourself don't forget to account for the PHR washers.
