Hey,

I'm looking at get a bike built up over the next month or so, I've been looking at the wheels at Merlin, but I'm not sure whether to go for the DT Swiss XR4.2's or the DT Swiss ex5.1's.

The build is going to be a singlespeed, I'm not a 'heavy' rider and don't jump.

I was wondering what peoples opinions were on these rims and how sturdy the ligher XR rims are

Cheers

ian

I'm not a great fan of the 4.2's. For a slow non jumpy type rider both rims have damage.

How about mavic?

If you aren't going to jump or you don't want to run really quite fat tyres theres little point in the extra weight (And expense) of the DT EX5.1. Same goes for XM719s, EN321s or EN521s (or any of the DH mavic rims)

If you're not overly heavy and don't crash your way through things than a DT 4.2 or lighter (but cheaper?) Mavic XC717 disc would be what I'd get if it were me

A Mavic XM317 disc is about 440g, so slightly heavier than a DT 4.2, but cheaper and wider/stronger than XC717s

I'd stick to 717s or 719s (the latter if you think you might want to fit 2.4in+ tyres).
