Came off last weekend, landed on my side, now have a big bruise covering most of the side of my leg and quite swollen at the top toward my hip. Never had one like it although not in any pain.

Am I ok to ride or should I let it go down a bit - internet isn't clear #helppeoplemakelifedecisionstogetthroughtheday

Tom - I'm aware what a lame question it must seem...I'm not posting a picture but its pretty extensive...I'm stopping typing now, each keystroke seems even lamer

How can we offer advice without a pic?

These replies have convinced me I'm medically good to ride 🙂

If you feel like going for a bike ride, go for a bike ride. If you don't, go anyway, you'll almost certainly be glad you did.

Just remember to take your prescription before you leave.

just put a slightly serious note, in with all the MTFU etc... comments if there is a lump/swelling, it could be a hematoma, which can be a very different little bugger to deal with. does the lump feel like jelly, fluid filled?

have a look on tinterweb, for some more info and some graphic photos. If you are happy its just a bruise then MTFU sweetcheeks and get back on the bike.

If you are not sure, best to get it checked out first.

I have a vague recollection of getting advice not to ride with a large bruise, something to do with forcing toxins into the bloodstream or further damage to the area

Could be nonsense though

Just to balance out the MTFU expert opinions above, you might want to read about “Myositis Ossificans”. Contusions can be more serious than 'just a bruise'. Dont want to scaremonger, but you did ask. It's exactly the type of injury where manning up is the wrong thing to do.

It's a big issue in rugby and the NFL, so depends how serious your injury is?

Agree with AgentDagnamit. A bruise is one thing but you may well have a proper hematoma and you can really mess things up by exercising it before it's healed.

I know this becuase I cooked my thigh muscle July 1st in a crash. 12 weeks later still get pain. It may well be just a bruise but if it's large and very swollen, take care of it (RICE) and maybe get it checked because it's not worth long term complications.

My goodness I can’t actually believe you needed or thought it was sensible to post this.

Have you no common sense?! If you think it’s serious and should rest then guess what...rest it! If you’re worried, try going to seek a medically certified person, not asking on a forum where we can’t even decide what wheel size or tyres are best?!

For the love of god, has it really come to the point of such stupid posts! What is going to happen to the world!
