Hi all,
I’m heading to Bala this weekend with my wife & children and am hoping to get a bit of XC riding in. As I tend to only have a pass out for a couple of hrs as we are only away for a long wkend I was wondering if there is anything really close to Bala? I know Coed Y Brenan is only 30mins away but if there is some fun nearer it gives me more time on the bike. We are staying at Hoseasons in Bala, Pen Y Garth lodges.
Cheers

Bwlch y groes?

Iirc, sadly from someone else's Strava ride, there's a cat2 climb from near Bala Lake and several cat3s.

The Berwyns? Potentially you could get your partner to drop you off and you cycle back to the lodge? Linear route gives you chance to have more fun.

There was piece featuring the Berwyns in Singletrack:

There is also a small bothy near Bala which makes for a nice all weather picnic spot. Can imagine it being fun for kids too? Check the MBA website.

Next to nothing in terms of local bridleways.Used to ride cheeky stuff up in the forest when I lived/worked there but that was many moons ago.Plenty of good riding on the Berwyns though.

Cool, thanks. I will probably drive as I will be riding when the rest of the family are asleep & if the weather is nice get a good sunrise in. Any ideas where the best place to park is?

There's a car park in Lllandillo on the left over the bridge.Nice sarnies in the little shop too.
That first route is not for the faint of heart (just the first climb will put hairs on your chest-450m in one go).A jaunt along the Wayfarers to Llanarmon DC for a pint in the Hand and back again is a good ride alone.
Vyrnwy is a little easier going.

Well guys, STW hits the spot again!!
Thanks for your advice about the Berwyns, they were amazing!! Some superb climbing & even better descending, exactly my kind of riding open tracks, non manufactured trails and super steep rocky technical fast downhills.
Thanks again, just wish I had more time to play up there 🙂

Cheers
