Any tips for riding bomb holes?
There are a few around my local woods and I really want to ride them,
but keep bottling out at the last minute and its starting to p*ss me off!
So any tips on technique and conquering my fears would be a great help.
Look at the way out, not the bottom

From my experience the standard option is to stare at them for a while before plucking up the courage the give it a go, then stacking it and going over the bars at the bottom. That technique isn't particularily difficult to learn and has been a feature of my riding for many years now...
Pre jump into it, nose it into the transition, compress into the bottom, extend off the exit lip and get a nice little bit of air ๐
Ride it a couple of times slowly first and build your speed up as they can look a little bit daunting, as most of the time your dropping in to them blind..

If your skill level is similar to mine then pre-fixing this with "phone for ambulance" might be a good idea.
Start small, work your way up.
We've got a couple locallly that must be 20ft deep (The army make them. Probably with bombs) that can scare the pants off people, but they're really tame after the first go.
Go in fast, or you'll never get out, look at the exit point. Other than that I can't really say what I do in teh middle of one....
Bum over the back of the saddle.
Point handlebars straight.
Roll over lip and RELAX.
Pedal up the outher side.

Agree with gee, with an added, DON'T TOUCH THE FRONT BRAKE... AT ALL...
it's just a downhill followed by an uphill so just ride fast enough to make it out the other side.
Don't sit at the top of it looking down! Give yourself a 'run up', not for speed, but just to give you rhythm, and don't think about it. A lot of the time if it was part of a long trail, you would ride it without thinking. It's just because you're looking at it as something on it's own.

I know the ones you mean. When you hit the bottom and start to compress you feel as though you're 4 times your normal weight, and your knees are about to explode. Great fun.
check it out first, if the bottoms muddy expect it to go all squirrelly as you G-out, also some cheeky chappys like to put logs at the bottom. As said don't spend long looking at it from the top. Depending on the shape of bombhole you may not want to get behind the saddle during drop in cos if you don't get back up quick enough you'll get well out of shape during G-out and hitting the up section. Try and stay relaxed.
Verses is spot on, never ever ever use front brake.
Ever.
bombholes are so awesome on bikes. there was one we used to session a lot with an exit about half the height of the entry, and a nice smooth downslope after it. ridiculous air time and time again. happy days. ๐
As above really. There were some i remember riding once somewhere near Reading. Bloody huge they were. If you didn't pedal on the down and at the bottom there was no way you'd get out. The worst bit is getting almost to the top of the otherside and then you run out of steam and stop. So glad i didn't use SPDs back then.
There's a couple of little ones they've introduced on the red route at Dalby in the last year or so. These are a whole load of fun except when they fill with water.
Ok, cheers guys,
now all I need is some free time to give it a try!
