It is very easy to get misty eyed about retro bike but sorry they are horrable
Yesterday I went for a ride on my rigid 1994 S/works, it was horrable head down arse up riding position, long 130mm stem with narrow bars and it did not corner
How the hell did I ever race the thing with some reasonable results I do not know, I guess being 16 years younger makes a differance
give me my Simple or 456 anyday

I would have to agree, was good at the time though.
Off for two weeks starting Friday. Taking my 1999 Marin Attack Trail up to Scotland, huge amount of fun. Could never bring myself to get rid of it.
However, will be racing twice in that fortnight and have a 2009 Yeti ASR-Carbon for that!
Daily bike, commuting, hack-bike, training bike, etc is a 1997 Claude Butler. TT bike is a decade old, as is the road bike. Would like better road and TT bike but I'm still paying the bank manager back for the Yeti, and that's a year old tomorrow.

I've just modernised a '98 Clockwork
Great frame, swapped out parts I didn't like & replaced them. I'm not one for head down arse in the air riding, but the OE 110mm stem is ok with low risers @ 625mm wide it handles pretty well
To me it doesn't matter if the frame is new or retro, if it's a good frame then it's a good frame, maybe modernising the S/Works might be in order 😉
You have a point Orangista but the S/works has a 1" steerer brakes that sort of work (canti's) I do not think it is worth the effort
But on the same semental score I cannot get rid of it mind, you it does'nt arf fly on the road
I have the old Tektro V brakes & levers from the Clockwork project you could have for a few quid, that's your braking sorted!
Just a cheap shorter stem & I reckon it'll make all the difference
If you're not too bothered about keeping it period correct that is
I've binned a few bikes that I kind of regret, but it's just nostalgia.
I have to agree (some) progress has been made. Like getting rid of big hairy muffs, I'm with djglover on that on too!

No, you just have to get used to the change. I wouldn't ride my 1997 full rigid Ti in the same way as I'd ride my Cove Stiffee but both are still great fun to ride.

Retro is great fun though.. sure they dont always handle or work quite as well but theyre still awesome fun to hustle along the trails!

I have a 1991 Scott sat on my turbo trainer waiting for its 20th birthday ride in the Peaks this time next year.
Was riding it until last April when a Orange 5 moved into the spare room
I still ride my 1990 Pine Mountain. I'm sure that it rode better 20 years ago! I use it for short blasts and nothing serious now - seriously uncomfortable. I love it for the memories.
