I know they're CNC'd and everything, but £19.99 seems a bit steep! You can buy a half decent chain for that amount...

OK, rant over! 👿

So how come Giant don't seem to stock replacement hangers for their bikes?

...to a million different designs, for no apparent reason. Some do have a reason, like Trek's funky concentric axle doofer, but most are just different for reasons of bullshit. (incidentally, the Trek ABP dropout, despite being a relatively complex design, is £10)

Was quite pleased to discover that my no-name carbon XC bike that I got off Ebay for £80 with a bent hanger, very nearly takes the hangers off my old Hemlock- because they're a totally random fit that nothing else seems to use. So now I can just dremel a bit off the lovely cnc'd ones MC made me (sorry about that mate) and it's good to go.

@stuey a more realistic price, but unfortunately none of them are what I'm looking for! The one I quoted is stocked by Wiggle:

I always thought they were meant/designed to be the weakest link in what could otherwise bend your frame or your mech?

Have a look on eBay for 925engineering - or online shop:

I've had several over the years.

$300Au worth. That's at least 2 X9 derailleurs.
All bend in the same place as soon as you look at them.

Suck it up, and buy two (or three if you've broken your existing one). Put one spare in your trail pack, and the other spare in your toolbox. You now have complete immunity against broken hangers.

Coincidentally, I had a hanger break on my cross bike on Saturday evening, 10 yards into a 40km night ride and the day before a 60km Keilder ride..both paid in advance for. The first time I've had one go in 30 years so I should be thankful; however, carrying a spare would have simply left me with a sorted frame but still with a mangled mech, chain and rear wheel.

that's how they make money.... crazy high mark ups on things that you really need when you need them!

If it's not snapped just get an alignment tool (~25 quid) and straighten out the old one.

tbh when I buy a new bike/frame the first thing I do is also buy a spare hanger. And whenever I've broken one, I've fitted the new one and bought another straight away.

Within reason, though. And tbh snapping off or bending excessively is more likely to kill the mech, by putting it in the wheel. I'd like all of mine to be roughly as tough as teh steel hanger on my old Soul, that seemed perfect.

Material and exact design makes a big difference- like, the one for a Hemlock has a nasty stress riser at pretty much the most stressed point, they all cracked in the same place. Some I've had have been made of quality alu that'll survive more bending, others have been monkey metal and weaken too much.

I've always got one with new frames 🙂 Which is only fair really. I do remember the spec ones were awful back in 04 and the 3" long Heckler one from 06 was a nightmare

Not having one for a cross bike is fairly mad tbh, I can't think of a bike that's more likely to need one.

Elsewhere.... do the likes of Intense (and Santa Cruz?) still build frames that don't have replaceable hangers in order to "improve shifting performance"? 1 hit and you are/were looking at a new swingarm!

Rip off. Some are designed with a weak point for no reason. Some are made so badly out of the cheapest aluminium.

That's capitalism!

£20 is par for the course. It does seem excessive but just pay it and forget about it.

Or stick a WTD advert up in case anyone has one they no longer need.

I still weep over bending the hanger on my Cove Shocker "that'll be £80 please sir, should be here in a week, maybe two".

@househusband good shout "Have a look on eBay for 925engineering". I've just ordered one and despite the weak pound, at £12.41 delivered, that seems a more acceptable price. From the photos, the quality looks good too!

The Union one would have endend up at around the same price shipped, slightly cheaper if the order is above £20.

Happy to help! They're CNC'd from aluminium billet rather than stamped or pressed.

Plus the manufacturers website will often have bugger all info and the LBS will tell you to bring the hanger in when all you can wanted was a spare

If your struggling identify your hanger, email us at BETD and we will try match it against what we make. We are always adding to our catalogue too.

Do you do one for a v2 fatty?
The original on mine is really soft, I know its supposed to be a sacrificial part but I think its doing more harm than good- it seems to bend just enough to throw the mech into the spokes with just a light breeze.

Email us a picture of your original hanger showing both sides to me paul@betd.co.uk and I'll have a look tomorrow.
