In attempting to remove my drive side crank arm I have stripped the thread which the crank removal tool grips into and am at a loss as to what to do... Surely the whole crankset can't be dependent on this small alloy section of thread???

You did pop in the solid blanker or a 5p piece before the tool?

You could just try going for a ride and see if it loosens up

Yep - used the blank. The thread for the removal tool is on the inside of the crank arm and when the tool is screwed in the internal piece forces the crank arm off of the BB when tightened. With no thread the removal tool has nothing to grip... Will see if it loosens up whilst riding. Any other thoughts?

Any decently equipped bike shop should be able to sort it for you. I did similarly and Beiciau Hobbs in Carmarthen removed and rethreaded the cranks for me. Total cost was £15 a couple of years ago IIRC.

how many threads have you stripped off. rushed mine last week & stripped about 3 threads off by not screwing the removal tool in far enough. Then did it properly & still worked minus the outer threads.

the forked ball joint puller is a few quid and will take it off

YOu can get a thread repair done but probably not worth it
