[#11445414]

had a google which suggests there are different sizes.
not sure which mine is until i can maybe have a look for markings tomorrow.... question is, do i need a special tool, or could i just use mole grips or the like? or will the bb be made of cheese and just get chewed up if i do?
id like to get it done in the next couple of days if poss so not got a lot of time to wait for the post, so any tips using normal household tools greatly received.

thanks

You need the tool. Any shop or even Halfords will have something suitable. You’ll very likely ruin it trying with anything else and you’ll need the tool for the new one anyway

The only one I know if that’s a different size cup is XTR unless something has changed

Shimano do 3 sizes. 39mm (Dura ace / xtr), 41mm (ultegra / xt), 44mm (tiagra / deore)

Did that change at some point? Or did I somehow just not notice? Sure I’ve run all of them at some point.....

In the MTB range, don't the current XT ones have smaller bearings and there for a smaller diameter? I think they come with a plastic insert to use with a standard tool.

Not if you buy Deore/Saint

I think they come with a plastic insert to use with a standard tool.

Doesn't work with all tools.... and good luck finding someone with the insert in a car park.

How often do you change a bb in the car park?

Last one I changed (XT) had the plastic adapter in the box. Didn't realise what it was at first as the bb it replaced was older and was removed using a standard bb tool, I was fuming at first as I thought it was another pointless change by Shimano which required buying another bb tool

Ha!! who'd have thunk it? was looking online at what the spanners look like and thought 'ive got something like that in my toolbox'. sure enough, i have one! no idea why, ive never had an external bb before, but hey, little victories 🙂

now, ive looked on one side which tells you which way to tighten/loosen, but the other side says 'do not disassemble'. whats that bout then? common sense says i have to disassemble if i need to strip the frame, but whats the warning for?

thanks

That means the actual internals, not 'from the frame'
