I can't budge the end cap on the left crank arm at all. Have taken out bolts and the retaining pin and have the proper shimano tool but it literally wont budge! Any tips for getting extra leverage or using something else? Have tried knife and needle nose pliers to no avail. No such thing as a straightforward job eh......

Screwdriver onto lug hit with hammer, better if you can get the rotational angle.

I had a DA one sieze years ago. Ended up putting the shop's metal tool in a vice and rotate the frame/crank. Worked, but left half the thread behind, which then needed cleaning up.
