The small metal protector to rear of chainset on my c/dale Taurine has come loose - what can I use to re-fix it

Epoxy resin (such as Araldite).

Just rememeber the importance of preparation with epoxy adhesives.
Degrease the area, roughen the surface, degrease it again. Use a decent epoxy as if it breaks you'll have an even harder time getting a good fix.
