Thinking about buying some knee and elbow protection - any recommendations and ones to avoid
Ta
661 for arm and knee IMO
Definitely avoid 661 veggie stuff. Hopeless.
Kyle Strait knees are faultless though.
I've heard nothing but good things about the 661 Kyle Straits. They're bloody sold out everywhere as well. I need an XL pair and can't seem to find them.
Fox Launch Pro knee (link). So comfortable, even on long climbs.
661 evo,s are good.light and well cumfy.
I like wearing Kyle Straits, but does anyone else find 661 stuff badly made? The stitching is coming apart, same on elbow pads I had. Race Face stuff seems so much better.
661 kyle straights on the knees, very comfortable, dont slip down, good protection and fine for all day riding. I found the sizes quite generous though, so if you can get to a shop that stocks them, try a smaller size on, I'd be very surprised if you need XL unless your a very heavy bloke, cyclist legs or not.
For elbows, the vegies are rubbish, but the 661 evos are fantastic! They really allow your elbow to move through all its complex articlation without hindering it and remaining very comfortable. I honestly dont know I'm wearing them unill I go down.
Just taken delivery of some shiny new 661 kit. Test ride at Laggan today.
Very, very pleased with the Evo elbow guards. One ride only, but they've stayed in place better than anything I've ever used previously. Race knee guards also very good - stay in place really well again. Bit hot in today's conditions though - probably more of a DH/Alps piece of kit (which suits me fine).
Kyle Strait knees are the benchmark really, Fox have copied them pretty closely with the new Launches which look good too. Fortunateson's spot on, the veggie stuff is mince, you get all of the heat and sweat and hassle of proper guards and a fraction of the protection.
For elbows, I'd recommend POC's Bone protectors. They look a bit OTT and DH-oriented, especally in the white but once they're on you can almost forget about them. Because the lobster-shell does all the hard work they're much less enclosing than any other pad I've worn, so they end up far cooler and more comfortable than smaller pads. Brilliant kit.
got some 661 d30 knee pads and they are great, hardly notice them when riding, going to get the matching elbow pads soon to replace my well used Troy Lee ones ๐
I've got Kyle Strait knees, Evo elbows. Can't fault either, although as benji_allen says, the stitching's getting a bit tatty on the Evos. I'm liking the look of the Fox Launch for my next pair, bigger gap at the back of the knee and a bit more on the shin. Plus they look the shizzle. ๐
That said, a nice girl in the bike chain did a good job of convincing me of the merits of POC's new pads. I'm thinking about it.
I've had a fair few different pads and my verdict is...
Forget about the 661 knee/shins and elbow/forearm pads - rubbish.
661 Kyle Straits are simply faultless for DH or trail riding.
POC Bones knee/shin are also superb but only for full on DH use.
POC soft elbow pads are pretty damn good too.
My Kyle Straits are knackered now and I'm just going to get another pair, they offer slightly more protection than the equivalent POC pads.
For DH stuff I use POC bone knee/shin + elbow and trail centre stuff (if I wear pads) it's 661 evo knees + elbows. I find the 661 evo elbows slip a lot though (unless I do them up so tight I cut off the circulation). POC elbows are a bit comfier (held in place by an inner lycra sock) but do look a bit Star Wars and not convinced they wouldn't be a sweaty nightmare after a couple of hours riding.
I'd be very surprised if you need XL unless your a very heavy bloke, cyclist legs or not.
I'm pretty heavy (17st now) and have very "thick" legs so I reckon the XL will be about right 0_0
Second 661 d3o comfortable and they saved my skin on the Venosc run in Les 2 Alps last year when I had a big off.
POC,vpd joint, most comfortable I've used,
kyle straits can wear all year round. Aything for your elbow they all seem OK. Expensive if you want full knee shin protection as cheap stuff rubs
Thanks to everyone for all the advice - very consistent views.
Now off to the shops to check out the sizes.
Cheers
