[Closed] Recommend some helmet brands for a long head

[#8366067]

I've got a big head, but it's long rather than round. I struggle to find helmets to fit, especially in summer when the hot(ish) weather makes my head swell and the front of the helmet presses uncomfortably on my forehead.

I get on fairly well with Mavic, Bell and - many years ago - Cratoni, but wondered if there was anything else you lot recommend for an Alien-head. I've not found the perfect fit yet....

PS I should add I'm looking for a helmet that will work for road and off-road. I have a full face helmet for damage limitation purposes.

The older Bell Super 2R was really narrow until the latest ones, probably worth a go if you haven't tried it and can find one. They apparently changed the head form for 2017 though.

Bluegrass Goldeneyes - I had about half a dozen lids lined up on the counter at Merlin one afternoon last summer after finding myself in a similar predicament. Going in I was convinced I'd be buying a Bell Super2, but the fit just wasn't there.

I'd try MET. The Italian head shape/mould is a little narrower thanot the northern European/American shape.

Met Testagrossa? My old one got destroyed in my RTA, been wearing a Bell Alchera for last 3 years, should probably start looking for replacement as Hell say 3 years.

Specialized do a couple of different fits, I've got a similar head to you and have an Echelon which fits really well. It's a road helmet but there's probably a MTB variant?

Not looking for an MTB helmet specifically. Ideally after a helmet that I can use for both. This is what I had before which was pretty good (and have a removable visor which is important) but can't find my size in stock anywhere.

My large and long head squeezes into the biggest giro helmets ok, a road specialised works ok and a Troy Lee A1. On my recent frustrating mission to find a more "trail" (?) helmet (not what you're after but perhaps worth knowing) the Bell Super 2R, Met, Mavic, Kask and Bonty were all too short. Some like Mr Men hats. I ended up with the Troy Lee.

This might help:

Or it might not. For those with the big head affliction, shape is really important because you're against the shell, the only options seem to be trying on a lot of helmets in a lot of different shops or buying again what you've already got.

Thanks for all the advice and the link to the old thread. I'm going to order a load of different ones to try. Will let you know how I get on.

I too have a long head and have found Specialized work well for me, you can try them on it Evans and get an idea before parting with your hard earned.

I've also got on well with the Carnac helmets at Planet-X, very good value and fit me very well indeed.

I was planning on ordering a selection for home delivery from Chain Reaction, Wiggle or whatever. Plenty of time to try things on without feeling rushed, then send back the ones that don't fit. That said, there is an Evans 20 mins drive away, so that might be worth a visit.

Long head here made even more difficult by being 59 cm which tends to be at the lower end of the big sizes and the upper end of the mid range

TLD A1 - enough padding to fit anyone. XL/XXL is just a huge bucket, M/L sits on top of my head
Seven M2 - fits because it's big, gaps on either side
Bell Super 2 - as above
Met Parabellum - not bad at all but the ratchet adjuster won't suit everyone
Bell Stoker - nearly there but still has gaps on the sides
Giro Feature - probably the best. Low profile, long but quite narrow
Endura Hummvee - very similar to the Feature but obv made to a price
Mavic Notch - 100% mushroom/parachute effect
Fox Flux or the indentical 661 - as above
Fox Metah - just no
POC - probably the worst
