[#4490754]

Having done the Passporte du Soleil for the last couple of years a smallish group of us (upto 7) are looking to do something different next year. Not sure whether to use a company to guide us and do the accommodation or try ourselves and plan routes etc......
Basic needs are:
A week
Drive there with our own bikes
Some amazing trails for 140-160 FS bikes
Guiding company to take the guess work out of it.

Recommendations and past experiences please.

if it doesnt have to be French Alps we had an awesome time with bikeverbier (as does everyone) this summer and will be returning next year. Natural rather than bike park but still with descending bias due to funiculars, chair lifts, minibus etc.

I'd done morzine/PdeS 8 times prior, and prefer the riding in Verbier (and the great staff, gorgeous chalet, fab food etc etc).

Allos, haute verdon.

Nicer riding than further north, better climate and the bike park is very enduro biased.
Local company, peps spirit (met them at the allos bike park and they are pretty cool)
Bit further though ๐Ÿ™

Altitude Adventure, mentioned on here before now, great set up and fantastic riding in the French Alps.

If you want to see what they get up to have a look at the midweek movies on here, posted up today is their summit to sea ride.

White Room for me... Had a near-perfect week with them, decided to go back next year before day 2 was finished ๐Ÿ˜† TBH I'd love to try some of these others though, if I can manage 2 weeks away.

If you like riding up, rather than uplifts, then A Quick Release were ace too. I've very little bad to say about them, but the lack of uplift would stop me going back- we got so much more riding done at White Room for that reason, and just made more of our time. But that's a matter of taste not quality, and AQR were great in every other way.

PS, Tracey, loving your choice of location... "Right, everyone cluster around the manhole cover"

I think a guided holiday is at another level from self guided, I've done 5 self guided trips and one holiday (Trail Addiction - Destination X) and I will be focusing on guided trips in future due to the amount of riding, the oustanding nature of the riding you are shown a lot of of it likely to be hard to find or accessible by van uplift only and inclusive food and wine etc ...a list below in no particular order of the companies that interest me and who are generally well thought of by those on here

Trail Addiction
Bike Verbier
White Room
Bike Riviera

Possibly the only self guided option might be Chamonix with a copy of the Bike Book

I spend all year 'earning the downs'. I'm holiday. I want plenty twisty, steep, rooty, rocky, downhill fun. Not climbing thanks. And I've been with Bike Village, was great, but more down and less up for me.

bikevillage are just amazing if you are willing and capable of more than waddling back down from a chairlift.

Maybe we should arrange a UK-based downlift service for those who feel guilty after spending a week not climbing... Ride to the top and get a cattle truck back down, clear off that gravity overdraft.

Uplifted descending is only an easy option if you trundle down easy trails. The hardest day's riding I've ever done was uplifted. But frankly most people wouldn't be capable of doing that ๐Ÿ˜‰

@cardo, I'd suggest you do your research online, perhaps contact one or two then make a booking. The main season is short, typically 8 weeks so a lot of companies fill up. Even as a sole traveller BikeVerbier was sold out the two options I wanted. It's worth checking what lifts are open when you book, the companies do run when the lifts are shut (eg more van uplift) but it can change the feel of the trip, perhaps for the better depending your preferences.

Areches Beaufort Destination-X was just what I wanted, deserted out of the way trails (aside from bike park warm up morning I mean 6 other riders all week), a mix of riding from natural to man made, uplift via ski lift/vans/buses/pedalling, based in a lovely unspoilt village, virtually no other English
