Wheel off is better but you aint getting one for less than £300

Tacx Vortex £220 on CRC.

I have one, it works great with TrainerRoad and Zwift.

That Turbo Muin is a nice bit of kit, but it's only semi-smart. It talks to Zwift quite happily but won't adjust the resistance, you have to do that manually.
It is very quiet and very solid though.

I thought the thread title was fairly explicit.

Elite Zumo is fully smart and about as cheap as wheel off ones get, plus if you are BC member can get 10% from Halfords. You need a cassette for it too. I got it in the sale for £360.

I have one, I've only used it about ten times so far, but pretty happy with it. The 'road feel' is pretty good, comparing it to a Wattbike Pro I have access to at work. Have only been using for ERG mode workouts so far (where it adjusts difficulty to x watts automatically), more than good enough for that, although does take about 3s to adjust the difficulty.

Not used with Zwift etc so far, only using the bundled Elite App which you get for a year for free. Zwift, Trainerroad etc are about £15-20 a month normally which is quite a bit of money if, like me, you are only able to get on it once a week.

The Direto lags a bit on gradient changes, but with 14% gradient simulation and me only having the feable sprint power of hitting ~800W for under a few seconds, it works for me and is a decent buy for ~£500 https://www.halfords.com/cycling/turbo-trainers/smart-turbo-trainers/elite-direto-ots-2-percent-turbo-trainer-732044.html (mine is the v1 from Xmas 2018).

https://www.halfords.com/cycling/turbo-trainers/smart-turbo-trainers/elite-zumo-smart-interactive-turbo-trainer-244622.html is ~£427, but there seems to have been quite a few QC moans on forums about this model and/or the Suito.

with something like the Zumo, what else do I need to buy? Would I need to buy sensors for the cranks or is that all somehow done within what comes with the kit? Sorry for all the questions. All new to me!

Zumo detects speed, power, and somehow cadance, itself. Not sure if cadance is accurate or not because I don't have sensors to compare against. You can run the Elite training App from anything I think, I use windows laptop.

Some of the QC stuff was calibration problems - the calibration doesn't seem to work from the windows app so Elite advised me to do it from my android phone instead. For some people I think the calibration fail just trashed their trainer which is a big bummer.

Only thing I bought was a HR monitor, and an ANT+ dongle for the laptop.

What I use to connect my Direto to Surface Pro...

ANT+ Dongle https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LIIMHP4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00

3m Extension cable for dongle https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00NH12O5I/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00

Coospo H6 Bt/ANT+ heart rate monitor https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01M8QD9Z4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s0

Direto does power and cadence over BT/ANT+

Recently I've found BT quite reliable using Zwift for Android app on my Xiaomi Mi A2 mobile, if Surface Pro is being used elsewhere https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zwift.zwiftgame&hl=en_GB

Elite Turbo Muin above. Mainly as it’s so quiet and the resistance is nice and smooth.

Another option to maybe consider...

A "non-smart" turbo with a 4iiii crank power meter (if your bike has Shimano Hollowtech II) you could use indoors and outdoors.

https://www.probikekit.co.uk/cycling-power-meters/4iiii-precision-2.0-3d-power-meter-105-5800-certified-reconditioned/12483713.html £210

My HR monitor (wahoo tickr) is bluetooth and I

  • think
  • you can only connect one device via bluetooth at a time, hence the ANT+ dongle to connect laptop to Zumo as well as HR monitor. Dongle is ~ £20.

Oh actually only other thing I have bought is a riser block for about £10 otherwise your bike is pointing downhill. Can just as easily use a phonebook or a block of wood or something I expect.

Also intersted in this topic for exactly the same reasons.

I'm wanting to set up my disc braked road bike on a trainer which has a 142/12mm thru axle.

How does this work with the Elite Zumo or cheaper wheel on models (I assume I have to pay extra for an axle??)

Do you have a link? It's still £12.99/month on the Zwift website.
