[Closed] Recommend me a rim for the more substantial rider

I've been riding my Orange Crush for about 6 weeks (not continuously) and have managed to bend the rear wheel rim. To be fair they're not a tough rim by any stretch (Mavic XM117) and I'm quite a heavy rider at just over 16st.

Any ideas for a sub £100 replacement rear wheel that has a tough-ish rim and a disc hub (preferably Shimano 525)?

Thanks in advance.

DS

leave the rear hub as is and get your LBS to rebuild it onto a different rim?

I run 729s or 321s depending on the bike. the former is stronger

how about a wheel with more spokes? say 36 lots of strength in the build and the spokes

721's are a bit lighter than the 729 i think, plus they are a bit narrower aswell so if you dont run wide dh tires, they may be the better choice.

would have said a 721, any hub. built with good quality spokes (these effect the strength more than other components) and built by a good well respected builder. wheelpro/ merlin spring to mind.

reversed the car over a 729 once, hub was well n truly knacked but the rim was still true, and still goes well ffatre rebuilding it on a new hub on my singlespeed today.

As above 721s are very tough I am hard on rims but these are holding up really well. That or I am getting soft!

Halo SAS - 48 spokes of awesomeness. I've a rear on my hardtail and it gets loads of abuse and is still in perfect working order. A pal also got a set cause he's a big lump and his are still going strong too. A tad heavy if you're that way inclined (i.e. gay)

Replaced my xm317's with en521's on my five, much better, take a beating and still true (as much thanks go to a good wheel builder as to the rim though)

Got an EN521 on the back of mine, still going strong with no attention required for 1 year. The extra width helps a lot too.

My 729's have proved to be very tough.

Not even a wobble in them after 1 DH alps trip, 1 singletrack type alps trip, lots of time spent on the hard tail in the peaks, N wales, Scotland and the lakes. I'm 17 stone and not gentle.

EX729's are bomb proof. I used a pair laced to hope hubs for a few years. Was ready to build another set but moved to tubeless and never got around to it.

I have two grey 729 rims for sale. One unused and the other built then unbuilt but never ridden.

If you want to go truly bombpfroof the Exal SP19/Rigida Sputnik is a good choice. Within touring regarded as one of the strongest rims, stronger than Mavics even. Very, very heavy though...
