can anyone recommend me a CO2 pump. is it better to buy one that takes non threaded canisters? I think these are cheaper to buy from supermarkets etc?

Also a good source for cheap cartridges.
I'd go for an inflator with just a head or where the head is detachable and that uses threaded cartridges. Reason being the thing is a lot smaller to carry and you can use larger cartridges that may not fit into one that uses a cartridge holder.
If you use this kind of inflator though... WEAR GLOVES when inflating! Even then I've had one burn my skin through a glove.
Cheap cartridges, places like - http://www.co2cartridges.co.uk/
Buy in bulk. Pack of 30 16g carts works out around 60p each. Compare that to £3 or £4 for one or two cartridges from a bike shop!
Innovations microflate nano plus a pump for back up. I've had no joy with the press to activate CO2 devices (a Giant branded one I gave away), but the nano grips the valve very well then you inflate by unscrewing the cartridge. Very controllable. Wear gloves.
Cut roady inner-tubes into 2-3 inch lengths to make sleeves for the canisters, they help take the edge off the frost-burn.
