The weather is picking up and the wife has decided she wants a bike but I have no idea what to look for. Looking at a budget of £300-400 tops, second hand is fine with me and it needs to be suitable to fit a child seat. Any suggestions?

Very light trail duties, probably something cyclocrossish but without the drop bars.
She's 5'8" (I think) and colour probably doesn't matter too much.
