[Closed] Rear tyre in "too much grip" dilemma

[#4385486]

Urgh not another tyre thread... here goes.

I run a 2.3 Black Chilli Baron on the front of my full-suss. It's ace.
Normally I run a 2.2 Black Chilli Rubber Queen on the back, but on Tuesday at Innerleithen I dinged my rim so it wouldn't seat tubeless.

I happened to have a Supertacky 2.35 Minion DHf in my boot so chucked in on with a tube, just to remind myself what Minions are like.

It was ace on anything steep and sloppy. Intastella, Prospacker, etc. But it REALLY slowed me down on easier, more established DH tracks. Basically anything where you need to get loose and whip the back round corners at speed. It simply has too much grip to get it to drift.

I don't have that issue with the Rubber Queen on the back. It's great. But it's crap on sloppy stuff. Packs up with mud and slides about too much.

So.. what's the answer? Is there an answer? A DHr maybe? A highroller? Is my riding technique all wrong?

Drifting and 'getting loose' might feel faster but I bet it isn't...

I had considered that. And absolutely agree with you. But it feels more fun! The Minion made it a bit too controlled. Less like I'm hanging on for dear life.

Maybe I can't have it all? Maybe I need to learn how to ride round corners at speed with grip, rather than sliding round them at speed?

I rode a LUST Ardent 2.25 tubeless on the rear on those trails recently on a dry day just after heavy rain and it was pretty mint and again pretty mint on other trails where you want a little bit of drift and speed.
A highroller lust is mint but a bit too much work and a Larsson is fast but can be a handful on off camber slop. Ardent seems a great all condition choice for me on the back.

I like advantages as a lightish all rounder.

Maxxpro instead of supertacky, if you want something similiar but less so?

But intentionally drifting the rear/doing cutties is mostly about weight distribution, you're not so much relying on overwhelming the grip, as reducing the grip. Or so it is for me anyway, though I will add it's not something I do much.

I like the look of advantages but a number of friends have had mega sidewall rippage issues so went LUST Ardent.

Yep that sounds about right. The supertacky DHf is just too difficult (for me at least) to unweight and get drifting. I have a Maxxpro DHr. I'll maybe try that tomorrow.

With the sketchy RQ's I just tap the rear brake and use my heels in a side-hopping sort of motion and boom - I drift round the corner. With the Minion I have to "ride" around the corner in a line. I realise "slow-in fast-out" might be relevant here..

Maybe my technique is the issue here, not my tyre?
