why am i being given the option? what are the advantages of a long cage, surely they just get ripped off easier in a crash and must be a bit heavier

You need a long cage to take up enough chain slack to run triple chainrings.

makes sense. so if i'm planning to run 3x10 i need a long cage mech.

Yes. Generally long cage for 3x, med cage for 2x, short cage for 1x
